Resilient local builders recognised and rewarded

13 August 2021

CENTRAL QUEENSLAND builders came through with the goods at their local 2021 Housing & Construction Awards, with the region’s best talent in the spotlight after a tough 18 months for local industry.

Builders, tradies and industry stakeholders came out in their droves on Friday, 13 August at the Frenchville Sports Club, relishing the chance to get back together in person and celebrate after COVID put a dampener on last year’s live gala event.

Rockhampton builders, Day to Day Constructions took out House of the Year for the third time in the past six years, with their ‘Jessie’ build, which also won in the Individual Home from $1.25 million up to $2 million category. Their work on ‘Nicole’ in Taroomball also earned them recognition for Best Use of Sloping Sites.

BESIX Watpac’s work on the Qantas Founders Museum Airpark Project in Longreach saw them take out the Central Queensland Project of the Year honour, along with the Tourism and Leisure Facilities over $10 million award. The completed project tells the history of Qantas and Outback Queensland in a new way, using the best lighting and sound technology available while providing the impressive roof covering to protect the aircraft display.

“From the challenging phases of working through design and engineering to the on-ground construction, BESIX Watpac exceeded delivery expectations, and to the highest standards,” said Tony Martin, CEO of Qantas Founders Outback Museum.

Yeppoon builders, Lyke Homes, rounded out the big wins on the night taking home the highly sought-after President’s Award for their Crestwood Easy Living project. The home, which was also awarded best Individual Home from $350,000 up to $450,000, was described by the judges as “a small home that provides a big impact”.

Industry individuals were also recognised on the night with Yeppoon local, Cormac Ryan from Jamie Stait Builder awarded Apprentice of the Year, Mel Warren from Rockhampton-based Chris Warren Homes snaring the Women in Building title and Sonny Fulton from Custom Building Improvements recognised as Rising Star.

Master Builders Central Queensland Regional Manager, Michelle Traill congratulated the winners across all 35 categories.

“Our members have truly lived up to this year’s Awards theme, Built to rise above, which was inspired by them and their work. The projects they’ve delivered during these challenging times are a testament to their skills and resilience,” Michelle said.

“2020 was a year of unexpected challenges and hurdles, but our industry took it in their stride and have produced some truly outstanding work.

“From museums, zoos and hospital redevelopments, to bridge reconstructions and complete home overhauls, our Central Queensland builders have shown a diversity in their work, our local community will continue to reap the benefits of these projects for many years to come.

“It doesn’t matter whether they’ve taken an Award home this year or not. Each of our 2021 entrants are a part of the Master Builders family and help cement why we’re so widely trusted and respected.”
