QUEENSLAND’S builders and tradies remain open for business and complying with the social distancing and hygiene rules, in line with the latest advice from the government.
Master Builders Deputy CEO, Paul Bidwell, said the industry has been quick to respond to the requirements, in a bid to keep the construction industry, which is an essential service, key employer and driver of Queensland and Australian economies, open for business.
“With so many other sectors already impacted, it’s vital we keep the industry going for as long as possible and retain as many jobs as we can,” Mr Bidwell said.
“The health directive issued last night by the Queensland Government provided some much needed clarity for our industry.
“It confirms the 2-person rule only applies to social gatherings and that workers are exempt from the rule when entering homes or private premises. Where the appropriate social distancing and hygiene requirements are in place, there is no reason to exclude builders and tradies from homes or other properties.
“For home and property owners, it’s important to know you don’t need to pull the plug on this kind of work – you currently have the choice.
“Whether you’re in the midst of a building or renovation job, want to start discussions about work you want done, or need some urgent repair or maintenance work completed urgently, you can still have a builder or tradie on your premises for the purposes of work and be confident they are complying with the rules.
“Whether it be internal work like a bathroom or kitchen renovation, plumbing or electrical work or the installation of blinds or carpets, or outside work like landscaping, providing the social distancing rules and hygiene requirements are met, you are right to proceed.
“Providing the requirements are met, there is also no limit to the number of workers you can have on site. For example, if a renovation requires four workers or trades, this is OK providing the right measures are in place.
“You may also find your builder will use measures such as staggering work and schedules, to ensure they follow the rules.
“We have been busy providing members with all the information and resources they need to keep themselves and their clients safe. The feedback we’ve had to date suggests builders and tradies are taking this incredibly seriously and embracing the requirements in a bid to keep the industry working as long as possible,” Mr Bidwell added.
“We are urging our members to keep the lines of communication open with their clients. We recommend they check in with clients before visiting to ensure everyone on the premises is healthy and well and no one is being quarantined or self-isolating and also advise of the specific measures they will be undertaking to protect the health and safety of everyone at the property.
“We urge home and property owners to also talk with their builder or tradie about the measures they are employing.”
