THE FIRST five star hotel built in Brisbane for over 20 years, a magnificent rural retreat nestled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and a Brisbane home that pushes the boundaries of affordability have taken top honours at this year’s Master Builders Queensland Housing & Construction Awards.
Queensland's best and brightest were celebrated when the biggest names in housing and construction gathered for the annual award ceremony held on Friday, 1 November at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Multiplex Constructions and Braeden Constructions were bestowed the coveted 2019 Queensland Project of the Year and 2019 Queensland House of the Year awards, respectively.
Innovation, quality workmanship and the ability to think outside the box had the judges wowed by the W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter project. The use of quality specialist trades, attention to detail, diverse finishes like custom mosaic tiles and hand-painted feature ceilings ensured Multiplex Constructions were awarded not only Project of the Year but also Tourism and Leisure Facilities over $10 million and Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety categories.
The Brisbane-based Multiplex Constructions team opted to build the significant concrete roof on ground level, using steel construction methods. Once complete it was lifted into its final position in five separate crane lifts. This innovative strategy allowed work to be completed on higher floors simultaneously and without obstruction.
Sunshine Coast-based Braeden Constructions were the other big winners of the night, with the Cooroy Mountain Residence taking home three awards, the House of the Year, Individual Home over $2 million and Best Residential Bathroom.
The owner’s vision was to create a residence that makes a huge statement while enjoying an appreciation of the landscape. The home appears to float harmoniously over manicured lawns, with a suspended slab that cantilevers the blockwork walls by three metres. A central and lavish kitchen is at the heart of the house, with quality craftsmanship evident throughout and rooms that take full advantage of sweeping views.
Brighton Homes, based at Loganholme, were ecstatic to receive the President’s Award and best Display Home $251,000 – $350,000. The category requires the builder to provide a functional and stylish home that the everyday Queenslander can afford. The team at Brighton Homes have pushed the boundaries with a home with inclusions usually associated with top end homes. It boasts luxurious features like a butler’s pantry, large centrally-located master suite and a kitchen that opens out to the outdoor via corner opening sliding glass, providing a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors.
Master Builders’ CEO, Grant Galvin, applauded all the winners across the 58 categories.
“This year’s Awards celebrate the best of the best, featuring quality craftsmanship and innovative solutions to overcome obstacles during the building projects,” Mr Galvin said.
“From exquisite hotels, extensive shopping centres, leisure facilities to luxurious residences, contemporary designs and affordable luxury, this year’s winners have shaped our Queensland towns and communities. They are a true recognition of what our industry can do.
“The high calibre of entries shows our members are continuing to push the boundaries, provide sustainable solutions and produce quality projects.
“It’s humbling that even after 30 years, the Housing & Construction Awards continue to be the pinnacle achievement sought-after by the state’s top builders and tradespeople.”

W is for WOW
Winner of the 2019 Queensland Project of the Year – Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd for W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter (Brisbane)
The immense development of the W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter consisted of an unprecedented high level of finishes. Design of the fit-out component was intensely coordinated and carried out over three years, resulting in some of the most intricate and complex features in Brisbane.
The site footprint covered 8,200sqm with the building featuring an 82-storey luxury apartment tower, 34-storey W Hotel, seven basement carpark levels and a four-storey retail podium.
Providing innovative solutions to potentially challenging safety impediments ensured this project delivered on all its outcomes.
Judges’ comments:
- “There were many outstanding projects in this category but this had the wow factor and we couldn’t fault it, it really blew you away in design and in quality of build,” the judges said.
- “In addition to all the technical building elements, site access on this inner-city site would have been a challenge. They would have had great trouble with vehicles having nowhere to pull off.
- “The tourism and leisure facilities are second to none.”
Relaxing rural retreat
Winner of the 2019 Queensland House of the Year – Braeden Constructions Pty Ltd for Cooroy Mountain Residence (Sunshine Coast)
With Mount Cooroy as a backdrop and Mt Tinbeerwah to the north, this quality home by Braeden Constructions appears to be floating in the Noosa hinterland landscape.
The way the Cooroy Mountain Residence interacts with the environment is surprising. With a mix of rendered walls and feature brickwork, beautiful timber floors, cabinetry and stone benches the design provides an interesting and unique house. The location and the residence provide the perfect tree-change opportunity.
Judges’ comments:
- “The welcoming entry area includes a central fish pond that can be opened right up as well as provide a calming rural view between the bedrooms and the main living,” said the judges.
- “The bathrooms are stunning, offering forever views from the stand-alone tubs and spacious showers. The main bathroom features a steam room while a mitre jointed stone slab serves as a central wall of the shower.
- “The surrounds include an ionised pool and floodlit tennis court as well as dam with cabana and deck. The finished product must bring the builder immense satisfaction to see it as such a beautifully functioning home.”
Budget living with luxurious style
Winner of the 2019 Queensland President’s Award – McDonald Jones Homes Pty Ltd T/A Brighton Homes Queensland for Mika 35 (Brisbane)
Brighton Homes’ innovations deliver inspiring spaces that create optimal liveability in this unique build. Not a single detail has been missed in Mika 35; like a butler’s pantry and a corner opening of sliding glass doors create an optimal indoor outdoor lifestyle.
This year’s judges were hugely impressed by the extra effort carried out, culminating in a home full of inviting entertaining and living design, simple but effective. The exemplary circular-square set window and sweeping cut-out breeze way with bench seat expands the view throughout, creating light-filled, spacious living. Mika 35 is an exceptional home and a credit to the Brighton Homes team.
Judges’ comments:
- “The home exudes expensive and luxury but it’s a budget home. This is created through numerous elements including the butler’s pantry and floor-to-ceiling tiles in the wet areas. They’ve incorporated nice touches that don’t go over the top,” the judges said.
- “Can we talk about the circle wall – it’s almost a picture frame and a real showpiece of this home. A lot of people would have been tempted to have this zone just as a straight wall. But it’s a quirk, novel approach that really opens up the home and is a credit to the work of this builder.
- “There is a real feeling of openness inside this home, the ceiling adds to this and fills the home with airiness and light.”
