BRISBANE showcased excellence and innovation at this year’s Master Builders Brisbane Housing & Construction Awards, with an abundance of exciting homes, projects and people receiving awards.
The event was held on 5 July at the Royal International Convention Centre in Bowen Hills, Brisbane.
East Brisbane-based MCD Construction were proud winners of House of the Year, with Highgate Hill Residence at Highgate Hill. Using clever design, they took advantage of the riverfront location. The judges agreed that this house provided ample open living space and great liveability. MCD Construction also took home the prized Individual Home $1.26 million – $2 million for the build, and won Refurbishment/Renovation $750,000 – $5 million for their Walter’s Steakhouseproject in the Brisbane CBD.
Project of the Year winner Multiplex Constructions used innovative solutions in a highly technical build for the
W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter, also receiving an Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety awardand the Tourism and Leisure Facilities over $10 million award.
Master Builders’ CEO, Grant Galvin, congratulated all the winners across the 55 categories.
“This year’s Awards program highlights the quality and range of building happening around Brisbane. It’s exciting to celebrate such great craftsmanship and the quality building practices of our members,” Mr Galvin said.
“The diversity was inspiring, making picking the winners a real challenge for the judges. It also highlighted the broad spectrum of the building industry where our members work.
“The Housing & Construction Awards provides an opportunity to recognise this talent. It’s humbling to know that for over 30 years, the Awards continue to be sought-after by the state’s top builders and tradespeople.”

Major winners
W stands for WOW!
Winner of the 2019 Brisbane Project of the Year – Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd
The immense development of the W Hotel and Brisbane Quarter consisted of an unprecedented high level of finishes. Design of the fit-out component was intensely coordinated and carried out over three years, resulting in some of the most intricate and complex features in Brisbane.
The site footprint covered 8,200sqm with the building featuring an 82-storey luxury apartment tower, 34-storey W Hotel, seven basement carpark levels and a four-storey retail podium.
To eliminate the need to work at heights, the W Hotel Multiplex team prefabricated the roof structure on the ground and lifted it into place. This allowed for works to be completed on the higher hotel floors, without the obstruction of back props, and for the construction of the roof to happen almost simultaneously. An innovative solution to potentially challenging safety impediments.
Judges’ comments:
- “There were many outstanding projects in this category but this had the wow factor and we couldn’t fault it, it really blew you away in design and in quality of build,” the judges said.
- “In addition to all the technical building elements, site access on this inner-city site would have been a challenge. They would have had great trouble with vehicles having nowhere to pull off.
- “The tourism and leisure facilities are second to none.”
Contemporary riverside living
Winner of the 2019 Brisbane House of the Year – MCD Construction (Qld) Pty Ltd T/A MCD Construction
Perched high on the banks of the Brisbane River, Highgate Hill Residence sits atop substantial earthworks, footing and cliff retention systems.
The main living areas are separated from the ‘back yard’ by a fresh water frog pond, which was designed alongside the native landscaping to emulate the natural surroundings.
Beyond the highly complex technical build elements, major challenges of sediment and storm water runoff and limited site access on an inner-city block required significant planning and control. The judges were immensely impressed by the infallible work produced by the extremely skilled MCD Construction team.
Judges’ comments:
- “Off-form concrete and the ability to get that so perfect off-form is fantastic and shows the level of skill of this builder,” the judges said.
- “The home incorporates different materials, timber, steel, concrete block that’s quite industrial but it’s all beautifully tied together and softened with strategic use and placement of greenery.
- “It’s visually stimulating but it’s not an overly complicated design, it flows.”
Optimal living delights
Winner of the 2019 Brisbane President’s Award – McDonald Jones Homes Pty Ltd T/A Brighton Homes Queensland
Brighton Homes’ innovations deliver inspiring spaces that create optimal liveability in this unique build. Not a single detail has been missed in Mika 35; like a butler’s pantry and a corner opening of sliding glass doors for a seamless transition of indoors and the outside.
This year’s judges were hugely impressed by the extra effort carried out, culminating in a home full of inviting entertaining and living design, simple but effective. The exemplary circular-square set window and sweeping cut-out breeze way with bench seat expands the view throughout, creating light-filled, spacious living. Mika 35 is an exceptional home and a credit to the Brighton Homes team.
Judges’ comments:
- “The home exudes expensive and luxury but it’s a budget home. This is created through numerous elements including the butler’s pantry and floor-to-ceiling tiles in the wet areas. They’ve incorporated nice touches that don’t go over the top,” the judges said.
- “Can we talk about the circle wall – it’s almost a picture frame and a real showpiece of this home. A lot of people would have been tempted to have this zone just as a straight wall. But it’s a quirk, novel approach that really opens up the home and is a credit to the work of this builder.
- “There is a real feeling of openness inside this home, the ceiling adds to this and fills the home with airiness and light.”
