Meeting Queensland's housing targets

We need to be building substantially more new dwellings each year to both address the current housing need and to keep up with Queensland’s growing population.

Unnecessary red tape in building regulation is a major barrier in the delivery of new housing.

Delays and blockages in planning approvals also hamper the delivery of new housing. A consistent set of rules for new housing approvals across Queensland would improve timeframes for new housing supply.

Addressing the other significant cost inputs to new housing, the major ones being land and taxation, will improve the viability of new projects and result in more housing being built.

Funding for infrastructure and social and affordable housing is also needed to achieve the step change needed to reach the housing targets.

What we are going to work to deliver

Advocacy with government:

  • 1. Develop and implement mandatory ’gentle density’ codes, including a Queensland Housing Code, to standardise basic siting and design requirements for detached houses, secondary dwellings, and small attached dwellings.
  • 2. Fund infrastructure to support new housing construction.
  • 3. Incentives for new housing construction including taxation (such as stamp duty) concessions.
  • 4. Support the Queensland Government to advocate strongly for Queensland's fair share of the Housing Australia Future Fund and other federal funding programs to help meet Queensland's housing targets.
  • 5. Increase funding for social and affordable housing to meet the needs of Queenslanders.
  • 6. Ensure an appropriate supply of build-ready, affordable land (both in-fill and greenfield) across Queensland to meet the needs of Queenslanders.

Master Builders-led initiatives:

  • Support members wanting to achieve accreditation by the Federal Safety Commissioner in order to access federal government funding for housing programs.
